The 2025 AI Behavioral Shift: Who is Actually Winning the AI Race?
The stakes are high in the AI race for market dominance. With a potential trillion-dollar IPO on the horizon, OpenAI is the market favorite, recently being dubbed the Yahoo Finance “Company of the Year”. However, Anthropic continues to make it into the headlines with gutsy Super Bowl ads mocking ChatGPT’s monetization, alongside aggressive revenue projections as it eyes profitability in the coming years. Meanwhile, entrenched giants like Google and Meta are investing billions of dollars to build and scale their own AI infrastructure.
But who is actually winning?
At Behavix, we transform real, consent-based digital behavior into predictive, privacy-first insights. Using our Data-as-a-Service platform and analyst-ready clickstream feeds, we enable hedge funds, analysts, and enterprise clients to decode shifting consumer patterns with precision. Relying on our cross-device, person-based panel of opted-in users, here is what real-time behavioral signals reveal about the developing AI landscape.
AI Assistants Move from Niche to Mainstream
Regardless of who wins the AI arms race, AI assistants are now a permanent fixture in US consumer
routines. Pew Research reported that 34% of U.S. adults had used a chatbot by
mid-2025,
and our telemetry confirms this explosive growth. Over the year, monthly reach more than doubled from 15% in Q1 to
nearly 35% in Q4, while average monthly time spent jumped 50% to an hour and a half.
Google Gemini Becomes a Serious Contender
While ChatGPT showed impressive gains in 2025 by doubling its monthly reach, no platform had as much momentum as Google’s Gemini models. Gemini’s overall time spent doubled from about 15 minutes per user per month to over 30, and monthly sessions per user tripled from about 5 to 15 during the same period.
However, Behavix’s granular mobile telemetry reveals a critical blind spot: Gemini is struggling on mobile. Despite
its overall momentum, its mobile engagement remains remarkably low, capturing a mere 5 to 6 minutes and around 6 to 7
sessions per user per month at the end of 2025.
Claude and Grok Show Strong Engagement Despite Low Adoption
Both Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok have grown tremendously in 2025 but remain below 2% reach in the consumer market. Nonetheless, Claude and Grok have some of the highest monthly user retention rates of roughly 56% and 54%, respectively.
Despite lower adoption, these platforms attract highly engaged power users. Claude’s monthly user engagement nearly
matches ChatGPT’s intensive usage, highlighting its growing role as a habitual, deep-work tool for its loyal user
base.
Will AI Assistants Replace Search?
With AI Assistants also being used to answer everyday questions, there’s been ample speculation that they will overtake and replace Search. However, as seen by Google Search’s maintained reach and very high engagement, it appears that Search continues to be an everyday utility alongside AI Assistants. While OpenAI ChatGPT has an extraordinary monthly user retention rate of roughly 78%, it still falls short of Google Search’s ironclad 95% retention.
Furthermore, Behavix’s timestamped clickstream data enables detailed analysis of cross-platform journeys. What we see is a complementary loop: users are 90% more likely than usual to go to ChatGPT after using Google Search, and 70% more likely to return to Search after using ChatGPT. These metrics reinforce integration rather than displacement.
So who is ultimately winning the AI race? Our behavioral telemetry shows that ChatGPT is the undeniable leader today, commanding the market’s deepest engagement and triple the reach of its closest contender. However, Gemini’s explosive momentum over the past year and its backing by the unyielding, complementary powerhouse of Google Search suggests the battle for the top position is far from over.
